Author's note: This is the backstory I've created for Vivien and Bastien Holtcombe, two of Niles' former chain of command. True, the story doesn't involve Niles at all XD; But I think it kind of gives a good idea of their relationship and personalities and whatnot. :D;
When they were children, Vivien had always watched with apathetic amusement as Bastien chased ants across the pavement with a magnifying lense. Listening to his brother's laughter, he felt like it must have been a great deal of fun, but the one time he had tried it himself, he hadn't seen the point, and so he had handed the glass back over to his twin. It was more fun watching his little brother's delight, anyway.
Despite coming to this conclusion, the occasion continued to bother Vivien. Bastien always exercised a great deal of control over others by way of force, and, though his brother's victims obeyed him by association (or by misrecognition; very few people could tell the identical twins apart), he was beginning to feel as if he didn't measure up. He didn't dare talk to Bastien about it; if his brother was in a good mood, he would insist it wasn't the truth, and if he was in a bad mood, he'd scoff and cast the words aside. Vivien loved his brother and didn't mind living under his name half the time, but the feeling at the back of his mind still bothered him, nonetheless.
Time went by, and when Bastien joined the military at 16, Vivien followed suit. He wasn't sure whether it was because he wasn't sure if he was anything without his brother's name or if it was because the world had always been "their world" and he didn't think he could face it alone, but he was sure of one thing: he didn't join because he wanted to be in the military. He had been more than apprehensive at first (but he didn't let it show, of course) because he had never been any good at anything physical, and even if they did buy their way past the lower ranks, he was afraid he'd have to fight. The first few weeks, he clung to his brother's side afraid to venture beyond the safety net of the identical protector beside whom he had always lived.
But as the first few weeks past, Vivien began to realize that here, in this organized, uptight office setting, he could get by without the violent order his brother offered. In fact, as the weeks melted into months, Vivien realized with great shock that Bastien had no power here. Even as Warrant Officers, they were fairly near the
bottom of the food chain, and there was no way for Bastien to get what he wanted through force. Vivien, on the other hand, found it easy to lie to his superiors to get what he needed. Strangely enough, it seemed that military men were just as emotional as anyone else, and Vivien didn't have any trouble nor any qualms with playing to those feelings in order to get what he wanted.
It amazed him, really, thinking back to the ants and the magnifying lense, that for once, he was in conrtol. He didn't mind that his brother was still the more confident one; he would always live by Bastien's side, and he was even happy for him when his younger brother was promoted a rank above him. Things wouldn't change too much, and Vivien was perfectly fine with that.
After all, after hours, Bastien would always be the one to press Vivien up against the wall and kiss him senseless, and Bastien would always be the one to push him back into the mattress and fuck him into the early hours of the morning, and Vivien liked it that way. Sometimes, as he lay awake wrapped up in his brother's arms, he would wonder if it shouldn't be him, as the elder twin, him as the one in control, him on top. But he knows that when he limps to breakfast the next morning and flinches away when his brother touches the bruise on his shoulder, Bastien will kiss him just the way he wants, and he knows that this is the way he likes it.
