Disclaimer: Blame Konomi, not me.
Warnings: BL, bad language, a kiss (and not even on the lips, either). This one's pretty tame, honestly.
Author's Note: Fuun Shounen Atobe introduced me to the adorable that is Shishido and Gakuto's relationship. XD;;; Their bffl dynamic totally had me squeeing. I promised you fic, and so, here you have it. XD;;
Oshitari doesn't quite understand Gakuto and Shishido's relationship. Every time he thinks he he might be able to capture it in words, something happens that spins everything around and makes Oshitari wonder if there even are words for such interactions between two human beings. Rivals, friends, acquaintances, none of them really seem to fit, and though it's not like Oshitari pointedly makes a study out of it, he's fairly sure that no word he might look up in the dictionary would fit either.
He's asked Gakuto before on several occasions, the first of which being before they were dating (which was under vaguely different circumstances; Oshitari had been fully prepared to steal Gakuto away from Shishido when Gakuto had raised an eyebrow and given him the most disdainful look and said, "We're not dating, you know," as if it ought to be perfectly obvious and Oshitari were stupid for even asking) and the most recent of which being a few months ago. Gakuto had finally sighed and said, "Yuushi, it's simple, we've known each other since elementary school and we've always been together since then. We fight and cuss at one another and hang out and laugh together-- that's just how it goes. Okay?" And Oshitari hadn't known what else to say besides, "Okay."
He's also had a conversation with Ootori on the subject as well; one afternoon, when Gakuto and Shishido were playing one another, all taunts and swears and general noisy foulmouthery, he had nonchalantly sauntered over beside Shishido's boyfriend and watched the match for a while, and, after multiple "gekidasa daze"s and "ue ni wa ue ga iru koto wo oshieru yo"s, he mentioned, as cooly as possible, "So those two seem to be having a good time."
Ootori had smiled that smile that was enough to give one cavities, the smile he always wore when he was thinking about Shishido. "Yeah. Those two are best friends, after all."
Oshitari had been confused. Of all the words he had thought of as descriptions, those had not been amongst them. "Best friends? Those two?"
Ootori blinked, then shrugged, that smile settling into his features as he gazed back out lovingly at the match. "I think so. I don't think it's something that you or I will ever be able to comprehend in them, but they've known one another much longer than we've known them. There's something there that I can't really understand, but that doesn't make it shine any less brightly."
Oshitari looked at Ootori for a moment, trying to assess and process exactly what the boy had just said, but he was distracted by the loud cry of victory coming from the court before them. Gakuto was doing a series of one-handed handsprings now, laughing at Shishido, who appeared to be swearing right back at him. Gakuto gleefully hopped the net to Shishido's side of the court, sticking out his tongue. "Told you I'd kick your ass!"
"Shut the fuck up! I'm just off my game today," Shishido grumbled, already having turned his back to Gakuto and begun walking towards where Ootori and Oshitari were standing.
"Excuses, excuses," Gakuto shot back gleefully, bounding past him to jump at Oshitari, a habit Oshitari had finally learned to respond to in time to avoid injury. Catching his projectile boyfriend, he wrapped his arms around Gakuto's waist as Gakuto looked up at him, all bright eyed and wide grinned. "Did you see me, Yuushi?"
"It was a lovely victory," Oshitari drawled back, despite having missed the winning shot, placing a kiss on Gakuto's cheek before setting him back on the ground. "Shall we go get cleaned up now? I know I promised you ice cream later, but we ought to get to dinner first."
Gakuto nodded, dropping Oshitari's hand for a moment. "Hold on, Yuushi," he bade, before jogging after Shishido, who was already heading in the other direction with Ootori. "Hey, Ryou!"
Shishido looked over his shoulder, unable to turn fully while still holding Ootori's hand. "What's up, Gakuto?"
"I've got a date with Yuushi at night, but wanna hang out on Sunday afternoon? Catch some of the French Open, maybe play a set or two?"
Shishido grinned. "Sure thing. I'm gonna kick your ass this time."
"Pfft. As if!" Gakuto shot back with a grin before bouncing back over to Oshitari and taking his hand once again. "All right, let's go."
As Oshitari looked down at him, grinning softly to himself even as they reached the locker room doors, he thought he might see what Ootori meant. He was probably never, ever going to be able to find words for Gakuto's relationship with Shishido, but whatever it was, it made Gakuto happy, and even if he couldn't define it, Oshitari was okay with that.
