Disclaimer: Fullmetal Alchemist is not mine; it belongs to Hiromu Arakawa and Square Enix.
Warnings: Shounen-ai, AU-ishness...me taking liberties with things Arakawa-sensei never mentions.
Author's note: I've been told by two people now that there are other stories out there about this particular subject, but I haven't read them myself...this only stemmed from a conversation I was having with a friend about nationalities of FMA characters...^^; So I'm not trying to steal anybody's ideas or anything. Anyway, I had a ton of fun writing this, and I think it may turn into its own little verse, if I'm not careful. ^^;
Amestris was not an overly friendly country toward outside nations. They had recently conquered the former-country of Ishbal, and Dramcha seemed to be heading towards the same fate. Foreigners in the country were treated with a generally large amount of prejudice, and more and more laws were appearing to ban the prolonged stay of aliens.
Of course, however, there were plenty of citizens in Amestris who were foreign. Military officers, even, who, though citizens of the country, were of some if not all foreign lineage. For those of Ishballan and Aerugish decent, it was unfortunately obvious, even though anyone of those nationalities did their best to keep it form conversation. There were also, however, officers of foreign blood who did better at hiding their decent. Few people knew that Second Lieutenant Jean Havoc was the son of Cretian immigrants, or that the late Brigadier General Maes Hughes' wife Gracia was of Dramchan decent.
No one, as far as he knew, knew that Colonel Roy Mustang was half Xingese. It was one of his best-kept secrets; he left no evidence that he ever was or had been a part of this culture, and confided in no one, not even his office staff. Though his small, dark, slanted eyes and dark hair were somewhat of a giveaway, he had been lucky enough to recieve light skin and quite a bit of height from his father's side of the gene pool, and he used those traits to his full advantage. No one ever knew that Colonel Mustang was the son of a foreign mother, a mother who died before she ever reached Amestris, anyway.
No one, that was, until the Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward Elric, came along.
Edward was one-hundred percent Amestresian from the tip of his golden blonde hair to the tips of his fair-skinned toes. Roy also found him one-hundred percent irresistible, which led to the current problem.
Ed stood, arms crossed, facing Roy, an indignant scowl on his face. Roy knew the expression well; it was the face if a spoiled child who hadn't gotten what he thought he deserved, and, usually Roy ignored the face altogether and said something so that Ed couldn't keep it up, but now, he couldn't help but feel Ed had the right to be annoyed. They had been together for a year now, and Roy still hadn't told Ed anything of his past. This seemed quintessentially unfair, since Roy knew from the start every detail of Ed's life after the age of 10.
Roy sighed, then crossed the room, his living room, to stand beside Ed before sitting down on the couch and tugging on Ed's sleeve, indicating for him to do the same. Ed complied, though he made quite a show of sighing loudly and throwing his body onto the piece of furniture in the most un-dignified manner possible. He gave Roy an expectant look, and Roy couldn't help but melt to the passion of his wish. He took a deep breath, then looked down at his hands.
"I was born in Xing in 1888..."
