Total word count this year
59,538 words. Continuing on my trend from last year, I wrote significantly less this year than in 2015. I feel like I'm always full of excuses, but this year has been a stressful one, and in the latter half of the year, it's pretty clear I was mostly only writing for the sake of writing, not because I had something I really wanted to write, since my fics are mostly short, pointless, and for shiritori. I'm trying to come to peace with this, because there's really no point in writing if it doesn't make me happy, so I'm just trying to do what moves me and not beat myself up over what I feel like my responsibility should be in terms of writing fic.
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
I wrote significantly less than the previous year, 8 less fics and about 2,000 less words. I made up for some of the shortage of fics by writing a 13,000+ word fic in January of this year, but I still was pretty unproductive. Like I said above, though, I'm trying to do what makes me happy right now, and accept that if that means less fics for right now, then so be it.
Where did you publish/archive your stories?
Same as last year: my JE fic archive and my AO3 account, though AO3 is painfully out of date >_>;
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2010?
The surprise fandom that made an appearance this year was NEWS, which stole my heart during an emotionally difficult period for me in spring. Discovering my love of Shige made it such that 5 of my fics this year feature him prominently! Another thing that surprised me is how few AUs I wrote this year; compared to years previous, the number of fics not set in canon is negligible. I'm pretty sad about that, so I'm going to try to write more AUs in 2017! (As an aside, unsurprisingly again, the main pairing of the year was Inoo and Hikaru, with 11 out of 26 total fics being about the two of them.)
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
This is always a difficult question, but I think くさ夫くん物語 has to take the cake this year. You know I really love a fic when I put so much effort into it that it breaks 8,000 words; because most of my ideas tend to be bite-sized and not so inspired that I'm willing to put thousands of words of effort into them, the long ones tend to be the ones I poured my heart into. I don't know how the heck I was so inspired by that one 20-minute episode of Ya-ya-yah that I made this whole verse and fic off of it, but hey, I'm pretty happy with the end result. It also is prominently my biggest foray into het pairings, so there's that, I guess?
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
None of my stories are very popular, this year more than ever, since I didn't participate in any exchanges in 2016, but I do know that for some reason, Jealousy got a lot of attention. It was sort of a one-off idea and not particularly based in anything that I perceive as real life, so I was surprised!
Story most under appreciated by the universe?
くさ夫くん物語, of course, lol. I spent so long working on it, okay. |D; Though it's based on something so old and so obscure that I can't really expect people to be interested in it... |D;;
Story that could have been better?
I'll stick with what I said last year: "I wrote a lot of drabbles with less than 1,000 words for Shiritori this year that probably could have been better if they were longer and more fleshed out, but I procrastinated too long and ended up in a time crunch ><"
I think the only porn that I wrote this year was Uncaught, but I do enjoy writing Inoo and Hikaru doing ridiculous things during sex, ahaha.
Most fun story?
It's short, but I really enjoyed writing non-alcohol, and I recently reread it and gave myself a good laugh all over again. I hate to seem big-headed, but I really do think I managed to write something pretty funny with that one.
Story with single sweetest moment?
I think Private was pretty sweet; I really like imagining Inoo and Hikaru's little quiet moments alone together ;~;
The story that made you cry?
Somehow I made it through the year without writing anything terribly life-ruining?? I guess maybe Foresight, or: Five times Kusano was right, and one time he was pretty darn close was a little sad, but I don't think I cried. XD;
Hardest story to write?
くさ夫くん物語, because it was fucking 13,000+ words long! I also spent a long time agonizing if the story was clear enough to people who weren't living inside my head, so hopefully it did come out not too convoluted.
Easiest story to write?
I think this year my fallback "easy" story was one about Inoo and Hikaru together at work, whether it was a concert or Radirer. I also found out that Inoo moved out of his parents' home sometime in the past year or so, so I've been enjoying him and Hikaru living together, and as a result, I think that the fics where the two of them are just being them are what I defaulted to when I wanted something that came to me easily.
Most overdue story?
Every year, I say I don't know what this means, and, just like in years previous, I still don't. XD Maybe all the Kusano and Shige fics, because that pairing is awesome even if it's unlikely and weird? XD;
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I wrote new characters in a new fandom, which is a pretty big risk, I think! In addition, I started out with a totally ridiculous pairing (where one half is no longer even in Johnny's), so that's another risk right there, in my opinion. XD I still feel a tad judge-worthy, and I worry that I'm not familiar enough with NEWS to be writing for them, but I'm happy that I was able to branch out into a new group and write fic for new pairings!
Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
This year, I was to write the things that I really want to write and not try to force it just for the numbers. In previous years, I've written fics that were about things that interested me, but I feel like this year, that slipped, and I wrote a lot of things that I just wrote to have written something. I'm happy with all the cute and pointless Hikaru and Inoo fluffy scenes I wrote, but I'd really like to get back into the swing of being inspired and writing about things that inspire me, rather than getting stressed out by the pressure I put on myself to write.
Leitmotif of the year:
As always... "Um... feelings? XD I still write fics in which not much happens but people feel a lot of feelings and think a lot of thoughts... and I don't see that changing in the future. XD;
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Uncaught is the only porn I wrote this year, so... probably that. XD;
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
My personal preferences aside, I try to keep my fics socially acceptable, so that a wider audience can enjoy them.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
I guess that would have to be くさ夫くん物語, since the characters are by and large made up by me XD; Sadly, I didn't really write anything deep this year, sigh.
That I was able to write 13,000+ words for くさ夫くん物語, probably!
Story I haven't yet written, but intend to:
As of right now, I don't have anything in the works; I have so many other things that I need to get done first for fandom, like all my concert reports from the past (oh god) year and my Karafuto Ojisan translation, as well as personal life stuff like job hunting, but I want to get back into writing this year in a way I really wasn't able to for the past half year or so.
This week is already long, ugh, but the first week back always is, I suppose. I'll do my best to keep being productive!
